Prime Minister Hun Sen, who is also vice-president of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, said that one of the non-ruling parties had threatened his party for the reason that his party accepted the defectors who have left that particular party.
Speaking on Saturday 15th March, during an inauguration ceremony of Slat Rumchey Temple at Chup Trav Village, Svay Chek Sub-district, Angkor Thom District in Siem Reap Province, the Prime Minister said that one of the non-ruling parties has threatened and accused the Cambodian People’s Party of buying off the defectors who were leaving other political parties and he is requesting that party to stop using the word “buying off”.
The Prime Minister said: “It is a non-ruling party who is threatening a ruling party because its members have defected en masse, including important leaders, to the Cambodian People’s Party. Now they are accusing the Cambodian People’s Party of buying off people and they compared those defectors to banana leaves who are very corrupt. I have said before in Kampong Thom that they must stop using the word ‘buying people off’ anymore."
Mr Hun Sen’s speech was not directed at any specific non-ruling political party as having threatened his Cambodian People’s Party. But according to his speech, people can assume that his speech was directed at the Sam Rainsy Party which, at present, many of its members have defected and was awarded government positions.
The Secretary General of the Sam Rainsy Party, Mr Eng Chhay Eang, has denied that his party threatened the ruling party as implied by the prime minister but he is appealing to the leaders of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party to stop appointing those defectors to the government positions and stop paying the money to those defectors. Instead the government should use that money to tackle price rises and create jobs for the people.
Mr Eng Chhay Eang said: “When members of the Sam Rainsy Party defected (to the Cambodian People’s Party) they appointed them to the government positions. I am appealing to the Cambodian People’s Party to stop using the government positions and state money to award those defectors. They should instead use that money to support a measure to curb the rising prices of commodities.”
Mr Hang Puthea, Executive Chairman of the non-governmental organisation NICFEC, said that any attempt to incite members of another political party to defect to another party is a bad culture for a democratic society which will become a bad example for the next generation. And it will confuse the voters in making their decision to vote for anyone party.
Mr Hang Puthea said: “This kind of culture must stop if it is existed in our society.”
Recently, the prime minister had appointed all the defectors who joined his Cambodian People’s Party to government positions. But on Saturday, the prime minister has appealed to the voters to vote according to their conscience by voting for any political party that they like. He also appealed to all political parties not to intimidate or threaten the voters.
