TEMPE, Ariz. - "Sentenced Home," the second in a series of films on the refugee experience, will be shown from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 28 at the Tempe Historical Museum, 809 E. Southern Ave. Admission is free. The event features regional snacks, a cultural presentation and a discussion following. The film is being shown in support of the award-winning exhibit, "A Proud Journey Home: Cambodian, Laotian and Vietnamese Communities in Arizona," which is on display at the Tempe Historical Museum."Sentenced Home" follows three Cambodian Americans facing the harsh realities of deportation. As part of a large group of Cambodian refugees admitted to the United States in the early 1980s, the deportees and their families took up residence in Seattle. But, under strict anti-terrorism legislation enacted in 1996, their minor convictions as teenagers resulted in automatic deportation. "Sentenced Home" follows Lun and Kim Ho Ma back to Cambodia. There Lun begins building a tiny shack for himself amidst rice paddies, while Kim Ho tries to contain his anger and frustration at U.S. immigration law, and the lack of opportunity in the city of Phnom Penh.Sponsored by Community Outreach & Advocacy for Refugees (COAR) and the city of Tempe Historical Museum.
