PHNOM PENH, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- French lighting firm Citelum has begun a study to improve street lighting in Cambodian capital, local media reported Monday.
The company will put up streetlights in public places such as roads, parks and heritage buildings as well as public buildings, company representative Gilles Vernet told Phnom Penh Governor Kep Chuktema during a meeting on Dec. 14, adding that the study would take a year with financing from the French government, according to the Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper.
Phnom Penh City Hall signed an agreement with Citelum in September, the newspaper said.
For the first stage, the company will set up lights at the Independence Monument, the Kampuchea Thmey newspaper said.
Kep Chuktema requested that the project be complete before the 2008 national election, particularly at Wat Phnom and the Independence Monument, the Rasmei Kampuchea said, adding that he hopes that by 2009 the city will have better lighting when hydropower plants in Kirirom and Pursat province go online.
The municipality has been working to improve its image through the development of public facilities, the Rasmei Kampuchea said.
