Cambodia’s Rio Olympics taekwondo medal hope Sorn Seavmey has resumed normal training in South Korea after a knee injury set her back by a couple of weeks.

According to Seavmey’s coach Choi Yong Sok, the Rio qualifier hurt herself in a practice session. But she is now back to her regular routine.

“It took her nearly a week of treatment for the pain and swelling to subside and some rest to recover,’’ said Vath Chamroeun, secretary-general of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia.

“She has been going through specially designed training regimen. It is quite tough and hopefully she will be up to full speed in the next few days”, he said yesterday.

“We are eagerly looking forward to her Olympic debut and our hopes of a medal from her had never been higher. She has been accorded a very warm reception in South Korea and the World Taekwondo Federation has also been extending all possible support to her.”

It has now been confirmed that Cambodia’s women’s marathon runner Nary Ly, who is currently in Kenya, will reach Rio by the end of this month directly from her training base.

The other five Cambodian athletes, Seavmey, swimmers Pov Sovijja and Hemthon Vittiny, wrestler Chov Sotheara and men’s marathoner Neko Hiroshi, will assemble in Phnom Penh on July 25.

The Rio-bound athletes and officials will meet Prime Minister Hun Sen on July 27 in his office at the Peace Palace before their departure to Brazil on the evening of July 28.
