Some 5,000 supporters turned out for the congress of the League for Democracy Party in Phnom Penh yesterday.
With an eye on next year’s commune elections, members voted on their political statutes, candidates for the LDP central and permanent committees, and affirmed the roles of president, vice president and secretary-general.
Khem Veasna, a former member of the Sam Rainsy Party who founded the LDP in 2005, was again endorsed as its leader.
“Since I left the Sam Rainsy Party, so far, the feeling that compelled me to start the League for Democracy has not changed,” he told supporters.
“In Cambodian politics, there is no one who doesn’t pursue their own interests, both those who rule the country and those who grapple for power. They always want their own interests.”
Cambodian leaders, he continued, “are blind people – acting ignorant, leading people in the dark. They take Buddhist teachings to cover their face while they conduct business and exploit people.”
Veasna’s outspoken stance against Cambodia’s monkhood has riled many within the Buddhist clergy.
Yesterday, he also took aim at elements within civil society who have, under the guise of helping people, become entrenched businesses, he said.
Leang Chan, a supporter from Kandal province who joined the LDP two years ago, said Veasna’s speech resonated with him, adding that he believed the LDP wanted to “help, not run” the country.

Mr. Khem Veasna,
I have watched and listened to most of your tapes. They are all have about the same concept: grossly insulting Khmer people and the CNRP.
You told your supporters that you and your LDP party represent "good deeds" while the CNRP's leaders and the CNRP represent the evils or bad deeds. You stressed that you hated the CNRP's supporters so much.
I am wondering what did these CNRP's supporters do to generate so much hatred in your unstable head?
Have they done anything to destroy Cambodia?
Everyday, you keep attacking incessantly Sam Rainsy, Kem Sokha and the CNRP at a time when the country is governed by the Yuon's slave party CPP.
In your views, the CPP who has been facilitated the Vietnamization of Cambodia is good while the CNRP who has been working hard to stop this Vietnamization is bad. This clearly imply that there must be something wrong in your head.
How many percent of the youth supporters in your party are the Vietnamese who were born in Cambodia after the 1979's Vietnam invasion? They may have found your party as a stepping stone that they can use to break Khmer apart and destroy Cambodia.
If you are truly a Khmer nationalist, you should review your "doctrine" and getting rid of the ones that are harmful to Khmer people and Cambodia.
You knew that Vietnam's strategy has never been straight forward. For example, when Vietnam wanted to kill Khmer people, they created and brainwashed the Khmer Vietminh and let these Khmer Vietminh kill Khmer people. The International community could not see who were the real Khmer killers.
Presently, Vietnam and the CPP wanted to smash the CNRP to prevent the CNRP from seizing the power. They are trying to push Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha out of the CNRP.
You have so many times mentioned that you don't need the votes from Khmer people. I agree with you because your sole mission, which designed by Vietnam, is to destroy the CNRP so that the CPP can stay in power to serve Vietnam.
In brief, your vicious attacks on the CNRP and Khmer people have been benefiting only Hun Sen and his master Vietnam. You are not helping Cambodia as you have pretended.
