Cambodia’s Immigration Police detained 25 undocumented Vietnamese immigrants in coffee shops and furniture stores throughout Boeung Trabek commune in Phnom Penh’s Chamkar Morn district, yesterday morning.

Chief investigator at the Ministry of Interior’s Immigration Department, Major General Uk Heisela, told Khmer Times, “The detainees have been transferred to the immigration department for questioning.”

He added that if they are found to have no passports or residency documents, they will be deported and put on the no-entry list permanently.

Since the start of 2016, Cambodia has arrested 127 individuals, including members of six different nationalities, who were working illegally in the country or had overstayed their visas, leading to their deportation.

The government began cracking down on foreign nationals for violating the Immigration Law in 2014.

2015 saw 4,424 cases involving people of 49 different nationalities end in deportation, with all of the deportees being barred from returning to Cambodia. Of those caught last year, 3,978 were Vietnamese.
