Media Alert -CCHR to launch campaign for the release of 12 land rights defenders imprisoned for exercising their fundamental freedoms

MEDIA ALERT - Phnom Penh, 4 March 2015
CCHR to launch campaign for the release of 12 land rights defenders imprisoned for exercising their fundamental freedoms

To mark International Women’s Day on 8 March 2015, the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) will launch a campaign calling for the immediate release of Boeung Kak Lake (“BKL”) activists Tep Vanny, Nget Khun, Song Sreyleap, Kong Chantha, Phan Chhunreth, Bo Chhorvy, Nong Sreng, Heng Pich, Im Srey Touch and Phoung Sopheap; Buddhist monk, Venerable Seung Hai; and housing rights defender Ly Seav Minh. All 12 have been unlawfully deprived of their liberty for exercising their fundamental freedoms in relation to long-term land disputes in the Boeung Kak area of Phnom Penh.

The launch will take place on 6 March 2015, when CCHR will host a press conference with remarks from Ms. Chak Sopheap, CCHR’s Executive Director, members of the BKL community and representatives of civil society partners working on land and housing rights. The campaign will encourage members of the public to send messages of solidarity via postcards, which CCHR will collect and send to the detainees every month until they are released. In addition, a joint public statement will be presented, and CCHR and other spokespeople will be available for interview.

CCHR welcomes the participation of all. Please join us to add your voice to the campaign to free the 12!

Date and time: Friday 6 March 2015, 09.00 am – 10.30 am
Venue: Cambodian Center for Human Rights, #798, St.99, Boeng Trabek, Chamkarmon, Phnom Penh
