US embassy urges its citizens to be at high alert for upcoming Water Festival

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- The US Embassy has informed its citizens residing in or traveling to Cambodia to be at high alert during the celebration of Water Festival which is scheduled for November 5-7, 2014 as around two million people are expected to come into Phnom Penh for the festival.

In security message issued recently, the US Embassy said "traffic will be extremely heavy throughout Phnom Penh, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours, and local authorities are expected to restrict traffic and even close some roads in an effort to control crowds.  You should exercise caution in large crowds and leave the area if you are concerned for your safety."

The embassy also mentioned the fatal incident occurred during the 2010 event when 347 people were killed and over 700 were injured in a stampede on a bridge to Diamond Island.

"The ability of the local authorities, as well as the US Embassy to respond to emergencies will be limited during Water Festival due to the severe traffic disruptions," it said, encouraging its citizens to remain alert to local security developments by monitoring local news reports.

"If someone attempts to rob you, we strongly advise you to surrender your valuables immediately, as any perceived resistance may be met with physical violence, including lethal force."  "To avoid the risk of theft of original documents, the U.S. Embassy advises you to carry photocopies of your U.S. passport, driver's license, and other important documents, and leave the originals in a hotel safe or other secure place," said the message.

More than 10,000 security personnel, including police, military police, bodyguards, explosive disposal experts, and health staff, will be deployed during the festival where about 250 racing boats from across the country will take part in the race, according to National Police spokesman Kirt Chantharith.

This is the world report on fatality rate in the world per country.

See the last report in the link. In Cambodia, every year, per 100,000 people, there are 22.6 Cambodian deaths to violence. In Japan, the figure is only .4 death.

This mean a Cambodian person is more than 50 times likely to die from violence than a Japanese! 50 times...oh my God, why would anyone wants come to such a violent country???

Did the Khmer went nuts in 1970 and murder 10,000 to 100,000 unarmed, defenseless, innocent Vietnamese Cambodians? What a violent country. One more thing, they floated the dead bodies down the river as trophies too, as an intimidation factor. Nasty and evil people!

-Drgunzet-,

Instead of criticizing innocent Khmer/Cambodian people, we criticize you and your deadly or barbaric Vietnamese folks who keep going for non-stopped violence and murdering Cambodian/Khmer people to take their land. You feel good because you Vietnamese leaders in Hanoi have big military that can control Hun Sen as your Vietnamese puppet, making innocent Cambodian people have difficult lives and suffer.

No one will trust your deadly and dirty mindsets like your other dirty mindset Vietnamese folks when gullible readers worldwide about to find out the root caused by your evil and deadly Vietnamese folks.
