[Malaysian] Pendang traders protest existence of Cambodian bazaar

Posted on 26 October 2014
PENDANG: About 400 day market traders in the Pendang district fear they may have to fold up their business, no thanks to a Cambodian Malay Bazaar which they claim was eating into their profits.
They said the bazaar, monopolised by foreign traders, began operations last month and had been selling a variety of goods at wholesale prices.
Although the bazaar operates only on Fridays, the income of the locals has been severely affected, by as much as 80 per cent, allege the local traders.
Pendang Morning and Night Market Action Committee chairman, Mohd Sanura Dahaman said fishmongers, vegetable sellers and food traders were also affected as no customer turned up at their stalls.
"On Friday, we have a market day at Kilang Kecil about 3km from the location site of the Cambodian bazaar. Many customers choose to go to the Cambodian market, instead.
"Prior to this, the average income of local traders was about RM500 a day, but now even to make RM100 is quite difficult because there are no customers," he said after holding a peaceful demonstration at the day market site in Pendang Town here today.

Mohd Sanura said a protest letter was sent to the Pendang District Council on Oct 9 to prevent the Cambodian bazaar from operating but to this day, no reply had been received. – Bernama
