Hun Sen Pays Respects To His Ex-Commander

BY  | OCTOBER 8, 2014
Prime Minister Hun Sen traveled to Sihanoukville on Tuesday to pay his respects at the home of Chum Hul, his commanding officer during the overthrow of the Khmer Rouge, who died Sunday at the age of 84, according to former Preah Sihanouk provincial Governor Sboang Sarath.
Mr. Sarath, who is currently a CPP provincial councilor in the province, said the prime minister arrived at Chum Hul’s house at about noon.
Chun Hul died of natural causes on Sunday, Mr. Sarath said, leaving behind six children with two wives, who have already passed away.
Mr. Sarath said that following the defeat of the Khmer Rouge in 1979, Chum Hul served as the governor of what was then called Kompong Som province until the 1993 elections, at which point he retired. Mr. Hun Sen defected from the Khmer Rouge in 1977 and fled to Vietnam.
He was a founding member of the Kampuchean United Front for National Salvation, which, along with the Vietnamese Army, toppled the Khmer Rouge on January 7, 1979.
