Japan to invest in Cambodia power

TOKYO - Marubeni Corp said Monday it will acquire a 20% stake in a Cambodia-based power generation and transmission business owned and operated by Malaysia's Leader Group, marking the first Japanese involvement in the power market in the Southeast Asian country.
The Japanese trading house will invest in Leader Infrastructure Ltd, which controls two 50 megawatt coal-fired power stations in Sihanoukville, southern Cambodia, and transmission line and substations outside the capital Phnom Penh.
Leader Group, the largest cable and wire producer in Malaysia, is a pioneering foreign operator of the independent power producer business in Cambodia.
Under the medium-term management plan set in April 2013, Marubeni has designated five countries in the Mekong River basin a priority region, aiming to accelerate investments there.
