Khmer Nationalism vs. Racism

A Symbol of Khmer Nationalism

Khmer National Identity
By Khmer Wathanakam

The words nationalism and racism are completely different in meanings and in practices, but some people have still confused the meanings of these two terms. Nationalism is always being promoted  and glorified by all the leaders around the world while at the same time, they have rejected racism. If the leaders lose sense of nationalism, those leaders are easily manipulated and swindled by the others. Nationalism is the covert agenda in international relations among the leaders around the world. Conversely, racism is totally nixed and condemned by all world leaders even though it had been practised in the past by some countries.
Literally, nationalism shortly means: devotion to national interest, unity, and independence. And racism means: a belief that some races are by nature superior to others or discrimination based on such a belief. Since the Vietnamese invasion in Cambodia 1979, the word "nationalism" has never been promoted and glorified by the government at all. Instead we have repeatedly heard the words solidarity, traditional friendship, brotherhood, and cooperation that never have been used in the western Society. When the opposition leaders and some people try to promote and extol nationalism among Khmer people, they are stigmatized of being  racists. Khmers, who have struggled to survive from Vietnam's domination for years, have been branded by some foreigners as practising racism toward the Vietnamese. In the contrary, the Khmer people are the real victims of racism policy imposed by Hanoi over Cambodia for centuries.

Evidently, Khmer Krom, who have lived in their homeland for generations in Vietnam, are being discriminated and persecuted by the Vietnamese government and authority indefinitely. they have not been allowed to form the association, to open their own schools, to openly practised their religion, to promote their culture, and so on. In contrast, the Vietnamese immigrants, who have lived in Cambodia legally and illegally, have been freely allowed to form their own associations, schools, openly practised religion, to promote their culture and businesses including  the rights to vote even they are illegal immigrants. In addition to these basic rights, they have more privileges and special rights over ordinary Khmer people; they are well protected and accommodated by the Cambodian government and authorities-- issuing citizenship card, voter IDs, business licences, resettlement and so on while many Khmer people have been disfranchised from vote on their own country, faced forceful eviction from their homes without proper compensations and other numerous social injustices. In such a condition, who are the real racists?

To survive from this imminent threat of the Vietnamese's domination and their unfair treatment on the Khmer people, we need to promote and extol nationalism among our people. If all Khmers can live in unity, work together to protect our own interest, and safeguard our own independence, we will be able to free ourselves from the Vietnamese's yoke in the near future. Without sense of nationalism, we are prone to be manipulated and swindled by the foreigners. For example, Hun Sen is a leader without sense of nationalism by always placing Hanoi's interest above Khmer's interest--border treaty, economic and land concessions, free flow in of Vietnamese immigrants, grand voting rights to them, and so on. Eventually, He has led the country to self destruction.

In short, all leaders in the world have tried to promote nationalism among their peoples in order to strengthen their national unity against the outside plots. Fundamentally, all leaders must have sense of nationalism as their moral and political guide to lead their country toward peace and stability on internatinal stage. However, they must not promote or encourage racism among their own people because it will be incendiary  resentment and inflict injury physically and emotionally to other peoples without any reason. The terms nationalism and racism never have the same meaning in any circumstance and should not be confused by anyone.

The bottom line is, Khmer Krom in Vietnamese are oppressed and killed by the Vietnamese. While Khmer in Cambodia are oppressed and killed by the Hun Sen government.

But on the other hand, the Vietnamese in Vietnam often degrade Khmer Krom as Mein or wild savages, and the Vietnamese in Cambodia often degrade Khmer in Cambodia are lazy and stupid and ungrateful.

The Vietnamese have a culture of killing other race since they moved from China. They murdered the Champa Civilisation, then they did it again wit Khmer Krom in Prey Nokor, then they did it with Laos.

The Vietnamese are evil. Not Khmer. Not Laos. Not Cham.

Yuon are living NaMbodia today got more privilege than Khmers Nambodians people here why!
#1,Yuon can form association and practice evil things as usual in Nambodia, thanks to their puppet Cpp Hun sen.
#2, They can participate in politics of Nambodians freely without intimidation of any kinds, thanks, to puppet govt Cpp Hun sen.
#3, Yuon can goes back and fort without worrying about anything but business as usual and they can practice religion and barbaric's bamboo culture in Nambodia freely. Thanks to puppet Hun that made it easy for them to survive, thrive and conquer.
#4,They lived on our water and eat our fish or stealing our job with Cpp protection and they have the rights to vote despite, they were illegal alien, thanks to Cpp regime that trying to destroy Khmers' nation for Yuon Hanoi.
#5,Nambodians can not do a damn thing because these bamboo's barbarian race were protected by their puppet Cpp Hun sen.

Khmers on the other hand got disadvantage in all categories in this regime,Khmers got evicted from their land clear the way for Yuon to take land as their concession.
* Khmers can't go to visit their families in the kampuchea krom without Yuon interference,Khmers krom can not form any association of any kinds in their own land.
*Khmers krom got putting in jail just because they stay late at night or suspected of politics' gathering or not allow to practice their culture and religion freely as Yuon living in Nambodia under Hun sen regime.
*Yuon defrock Khmer's monks any time they suspected that the monks were politics associate with outside world.
*Khmers krom got prosecuted daily in kampuchea krom under Hanoi regime today, yuon Hanoi were racist against Khmers krom every 365 days a year!

Conclusion:Yuons in Cambodia were given opportunity to do whatever they want, while Khmers krom and Khmers Nambodians cut off from the opportunity, further more, got harassment and putting in jail because distrusted or hatred toward Khmers as whole. So which race were racist? You be the judge!....
.......Wake up all Khmers compatriots, time is not on our side, fight for our survival as a nation, puppet regime has to go to END Yuon domination once and for all....

Well written article, though the view seems to deviate somewhat from the real Khmer-Vietnamese history and relationship through many generations, filled with inherited mistrust and animosity that culminated sometime in recent history, resulting in destruction of lives from both sides; and the politic itself has become quite complex that one, regardless of where he or she stands, can always rationalize her/his position. Blurry line between rhetoric and reality often reflects or even provides a base for some to enhance their political advantage(s). What critically important may be some leaders' ability and willingness to learn from the recent past politics or/and regimes. Take 1970-1975 CIA-installed Lon Nol regime, for instance, blending between nationalism and racism was obvious and what was even more so was that the scale tipped toward the latter. The consequence ? Beginning at one point in that time, first, innocent Vietnamese civilians were massacred, possibly giving an unintended pretext or excuse for an inevitable boomerang effect believed to be orchestrated by the Vietnamese in revenge for what they likely saw as racially motivated heinous killing of their fellows' lives, leading to millions of our Khmer people lives wiped out during the Cambodian holocaust. Should we, or more importantly should the new Cambodian generations fall again for the same political propaganda and potentially destructive strategy perpetuated by some leaders who seem oblivious to the past misery of our Khmer people ? How much did these leaders experience the suffering during the 1970-79 holocaust, or they never did ? Where were they when their helpless fellows suffered and what had they done to help liberate their fellow Khmers for whom they later(after their fellow Khmers were rescued from the holocaust) claim to possess a passionate love and care and want to rescue ? In rhetoric, the nationlism-racism definition difference is and should be clear. In reality, the blending of the two is what we, especially Khmers, should be worried about. Such blending was clear too, as some are pursuing their political goals, or rather power, signaling again a possible beginning of another cycle of mutual disrespect, hatred, mistrust, and later destruction of lives between the two peoples, etc... Can the innocent Khmers afford another chaos, if not holocaust ? It is easy to prevent than cure, especially something of that nature of recognized pattern. The point, as many probably share this view: during the Lon Nol regime, anger and hatred were incited and innocent Vietnamese living in Cambodia were killed. Vietnamese then killed innocent Khmers, probably insidiously, in revenge, in the 1975-1979 holocaust. Who killed whom first depends on who does the rationalizing. Now seems to be the right time, and the political climate especially between Cambodia and Vietnam provides a good opportunity to stop the cycle.

Historically, we are the victims ofthe Vietnamese's political and territorial ambitions. If the Vietnames stay on their ground, we have not suffered until today. You know who is behind Hun Sen?
