PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – Cambodia's
opposition party says it will call for a street protest if demands for
an investigation of irregularities in the country's recent general
election are not met.
Cambodia National Rescue Party
leader Sam Rainsy told a rally of several thousand supporters Tuesday
that the protest would take place if the state National Election
Committee failed to accept conditions for an investigation. Earlier, he
said his party will not accept the results of last month's vote that the
committee will announce Saturday.
He repeated a
demand that a special committee including Cambodian and foreign election
observers be established to investigate allegations of fraud in the
July 28 polls.
Provisional results favor the ruling
Cambodian People's Party's claim to having won 68 seats of 123 National
Assembly seats against the opposition's 55.
