KUALA LUMPUR: A hairdresser and his wife who were found guilty of abusing a Cambodian maid, have paid a total of RM4,000 in compensation to the maid in a Sessions Court here.
The money was handed over by counsel K. C. Hue who acted for Tan Mong Huwai and Eng Lay Seng, to counsel Kevin Wong who was holding a watching brief for the Cambodian Embassy.
The amount was paid before Sessions Court judge Rozana Ali Yusof on Thursday in the presence of the maid, Cheah Palla.
On June 20, Judge Rozana sentenced Tan to a day's jail and fined RM10,000 while Eng was jailed 12 months and fined RM6,000.
She also ordered Tan to be jailed 10 months and Eng six months if they failed to pay the fine.
Judge Rozana meted out the sentences after the prosecution had proved a case beyond reasonable doubt against Tan and Eng.
Both paid the fine.
The court also made an order under Section 426(1)(b) for both to pay RM2,000 each to Cheah Palla as compensation and needed to be paid to the maid on or before July 20 failing which they would be jailed another four months.

On May 29, last year, Tan and Eng, both 36, were charged with abusing Cheah Palla using an empty bottle, a pair of shoes, a weighing scale, an iron, an aluminium rod, a kitchen knife, a plastic chair and a pail.
Counsel K. Vikneswaran and Hue acted for Tan and Eng.
