AUSTRALIA has committed a further $3.25 million to help prosecute
suspected Khmer Rouge war criminals implicated in the deaths of up to
1.6 million Cambodians in the 1970s.
The contribution took the Federal Government's support to the
Extraordinary Chambers of the Courts of Cambodia to $23 million, Foreign
Minister Bob Carr said, making Australia the second largest
international donor behind Japan.
Senator Carr said the money would help ensure the ECCC could continue its operations.
"The ECCC hearings play a vital role in delivering justice for the
Cambodian people, who endured unspeakable suffering at the hands of the
Khmer Rouge," Senator Carr said.
"I look forward to the ECCC continuing its efforts to hold Khmer Rouge
leaders to account for the atrocities committed in their names."
Khmer Rouge leaders before the courts have been charged with genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
