Angkor a tourist destination

Give our kids a better deal
PHNOM PENH, 20th April 2013 (The Cambodia Herald) -- The Angkor temples in Siem Reap, Cambodia has seen an increase in visitors by eight percent in the first quarter of this year. As one of the World Heritage Sites (WHO), there were 694,70 foreign visitors to the area, in a report by the Siem Reap Tourism Department on Friday.

Last years there were 2.06 mln visitors to the temple area, a gain of 28 percent yearly.

The rise is contributed to visitors coming from many different countries to see its glory such as Thailand which saw around 28,300 tourists, an increase of 28 percent and Laos with 350 tourists, an increase of one percent.

While many of the tourist to visit the area are from China, South Korea and Vietnam. During Q1 Siem Reap was visited by 87,104 Chinese, up 77 percent, 142,040 South Koreans, up eight percent but only saw 45,760 Vietnamese tourists, down by 39 percent.

Angkor Wat, located 315 kilometers Northwest of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is the biggest religious monument in the world. Construction began in 1125 AD and was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II. The temple and the surrounding area is the face and heart of Cambodia and it's people, as shown on the Cambodian flag that bears an imprint of it's picture.
