"I am saddened by the news that Ambassador Holloway passed away," Secretary of State Hang Chuon Naron told The Cambodia Herald after the former ambassador died Tuesday following a long battle with skin cancer and diabetes.
The secretary of state worked as research assistant and interpreter at the Australian mission, which Holloway headed between 1991 and 1994.
"It was a time of difficult years before and after the 1993 elections," Hang Chuon Naron said.
"He cared very much about staff safety, as travelling to the provinces was very risky, because of the security situation and the remnants of Khmer Rouge fighters were roaming around the country.
"To have better understanding about the country's situation would require frequent provincial visits," he said.
"His tenure was also affected by the fact that an Australian national, Kelly Wilkinson, was taken hostage by the Khmer Rouge, at Tanei, Sihanoukville.
"Ambassador John Holloway, made his utmost to assist an Australian team and her father to resolve the matters.
"I spent many months in Sihanoukville, and we had to travel back and forth. During those day it was not safe at all to travel, even to Sihanoukville, as we never knew when the Khmer Rouge would come to ambush the cars on Route Four."
The secretary of state said Holloway was "concerned about our safety and from time to time made sure that all the arrangements were made to make us safe.
"He will be missed by us and many of his former colleagues," he added.
