Traces of blood have been found in a suitcase that was retrieved last
year from the submerged car where the decomposed bodies of French
national Laurent Vallier, 42, and his four young children were
discovered in Kompong Speu province.
Kompong Speu Provincial Court investigating Judge Chhim Rithy said
Sunday that the new traces of blood were found in a suitcase by a French
investigating judge and nine French forensic scientists and police who
arrived in Cambodia earlier this month to investigate the death of
Laurent Vallier and his children.
The traces, detected thanks to special chemicals and expert analysis
by the French team, add to the blood traces they found on the floor of
the French man’s house last week, and will be sent to France for further
study along with water samples taken from a water-storage basin also
inside the house.
“We have some blood signs in the suitcase,” Mr. Rithy said. “We have
small elements with signs of blood found on it and are sending it to
France for DNA” analysis, he said.
Neither the French investigators nor French Embassy officials will comment on the ongoing investigation.
While Cambodian police and court officials were quick last year to
brand the four deaths a likely murder-suicide perpetrated by a
cash-strapped and desperate father, Lauren Vallier’s family in France
suspect foul play linked to a bitter dispute over land between the dead
Frenchman and his Cambodian in-laws after the death of his Cambodian
wife in childbirth.
The French team was dispatched to investigate the case in Cambodia
after Vallier’s family in France lodged a lawsuit. At least 10 people,
including relatives of Vallier’s late wife, have been questioned by the
French investigators.
