PHNOM PENH (Kyodo)– A female Japanese tourist
died Friday night in a roller coaster derailment at an amusement park in
Cambodia, a local government official said Saturday.
Bun Tharith, deputy governor of Siem Reap Province, identified the
victim as 21-year-old Saki Takita from Aomori Prefecture. She had
arrived in Cambodia on Wednesday.
Speaking by telephone from Siem Reap, he said a Cambodian tourist
guide riding with Takita in the two-seat front car of the roller coaster
suffered serious injuries when it went off the rails. They were the
only two people riding the roller coaster at the time of the accident.
Local police said three people working at the amusement park were
immediately detained after the derailment, which is thought to have been
caused by a loose bolt.
Home to the Angkor Wat temple complex, the northerly province of Siem Reap is Cambodia’s main tourist hub.
