Opposition leader sends condolence letter to Queen Mother
PHNOM PENH, 1 February 2013 (The Cambodia Herald) - National Rescue Party President Sam
Rainsy has sent a letter to Queen Mother Monineath to pay his respects
to the late King Father whose four-day funeral began Friday.
"I
always respected and followed the ideas of the late king Father Norodom
Sihanouk to fight against deforestation and corruption and to protect
Khmer territory," he said in the letter dated Thursday.
"For the
rest of my life, I will always remember your good deeds to me during my
difficulties," said the exiled opposition leader who is believed to be
living in France.
"Wherever you stayed, in the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh or in Beijing, you always let me meet you and encouraged me."
The
opposition leader had unsuccessfully appealed to Prime Minister Hun Sen
to be allowed to return to Cambodia to pay his final respects to the
former king.
In 2010, Sam Rainsy was sentenced in absentia to 12
years for incitement, disinformation and destruction of public property
involving the removal of markers along the border with Vietnam.
