Cambodia launches $200 mln irrigation project in eastern provinces

PHNOM PENH, 21 February 2013 (The Cambodia Herald) -- The government launched Thursday a $200 million project to divert water from the Mekong River to irrigate 300,000 hectares of rice fields in Prey Veng, Svay Rieng and Kampong Cham provinces.

Water Resources Minister Lim Kean Hor said the first and second phases of the Vaico River project would be carried out by China's Guangzhou Wanan Construction Supervison Co Ltd.

Under the first phase, estimated to cost $100 million, canals will be restored between Koh Sotin district in Kampong Cham and Sithor Kandal district in Prey Veng (13 kilometers), and between Sithor Kandal and Kamchay Mea district, also in Prey Veng (27 kilometers).

The canals will be between 44 and 55 meters wide and between 18 and 25 meters deep.

Another two canals of 78 kilometers are planned from Svay Chikray commune to Sithor Kandal district and from Ta Douk commune to Mesang district in Prey Veng.

The first phase will irrigate an estimated 108,300 hectares of wet-season rice and 27,100 hectares of dry-season rice in Kampong Cham and Prey Veng provinces.

Lim Kean Hor said the four-and-a-half year project was being financed by a loan from China and that the canals would also be used for navigation.

Excellence ideas. Countries that had many water canals usually are very self sufficient and doing really well. Where there is water there are lives flourish. Small example my back yard usually boring and life less. After I build a small pond, now there are fishes, many kind of birds, lizards, butterfly, plants, even snake. I just hope it's not another ways to funnel corrupted money. I give this royal government the benefit of a dought.
