[Australian] LOCAL Couple making a difference in Cambodia

A Parkes couple has moved to Cambodia for 2013 to set up a school.
Jarod and Symone Lee left last weekend to work for International Village Care Ministry (IVCM).
“Jarod and I have worked in children and youth services for the past few years and we feel this has prepared us for this new adventure in our lives,” Symone said before leaving.
“IVCM have someone to take over from us in a year so this is an ongoing project that will continue to thrive and cater for children in the Siem Reap area of Cambodia.”
Symone works at Parkes Early Childhood Centre as an early childhood worker and has done since early 2011.
She moved here to marry Jarod - they married in August, 2011.
Jarod works as a window tinter at All Glazing and Glass and moved to Parkes in 2006 from Broken Hill.
Jarod was the drummer in the family band The Lees and also does the fireworks displays with his dad, Steve at the Parkes Show.
“The children in Cambodia only attend school for four hours a day and are left to wait for their parents at home or on the streets until their parents get home from work,” Symone explained.

“There is a huge risk for the children to be endangered especially with growing rates of human trafficking in Cambodia.
“We are setting up a day care centre/ school for the children to attend and be safe during those hours they are left alone.
“We will provide them with lessons in English and Maths, and also life skills such as gardening, map reading, world view, first aid, health, hygiene and scripture among other learning ventures.
“The organisation we are working with is called International Village Care Ministry which also has three childrens homes (orphanages) in India.
“They are looking to expand and this is their first venture out of India.
“The organisation is an NGO (non government organisation) and is run by Don and Joan Williams from Mandurah WA, David and Barb Tunkin from Mildura, NSW, and Alan and Judi Cockram from Hillarys, WA. We will be working closely with all the directors of the organisation,” Symone said.
“We would really love it if the Parkes community could get behind this project and if they can help us, that would be awesome!”
