About 50 soldiers gathered yesterday outside
the ASTV Manager head office to protest against the newspaper's
criticisms of army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha.
The group's leader, Sgt Maj Anuchit Silpawathee, said Gen Prayuth was
"the heart of the army" and remarks on the ASTV Manager website had
damaged troop morale.
Gen Prayuth had earlier criticised the ASTV Manager newspaper on
Thursday for its commentary on the pending ruling by the International
Court of Justice (ICJ) on the Thai-Cambodian border row.
The ASTV Manager, founded by Sondhi Limthongkul, a yellow-shirt
People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) leader, says the ICJ has no
jurisdiction on the matter, while Gen Prayuth believes Thailand should
respect its ruling.
The ASTV Manager responded by publishing a heated statement
yesterday, comparing Gen Prayuth to a woman on her period who is angry
at other people.
The statement said Gen Prayuth is angry with ASTV Manager because he
could not accept he had failed to perform his duties as army chief.
The remarks prompted the group of soldiers, from the First Army
Region, to rally in front of the Ban Phra Athit building on Phra Athit
Road about 4.30pm.
The media group sent out ASTV television host Kamolporn Romthongkham to meet them.
Sgt Maj Anuchit said he was shocked the newspaper would use such harsh words in its criticism of the army chief.
He demanded the newspaper write its reports in a more constructive manner.
No army commanders were behind the protest, he said.
Maj Gen Apirat Kongsompong, commander of the 11th Infantry Division,
yesterday called on the ASTV Manager to stop insulting the army chief.
Maj Gen Apirat accused the newspaper of waging a campaign against Gen Prayuth.
Maj Gen Apirat said he and other troops would not tolerate their
superior being insulted and were acting to protect the dignity of the
army chief.
Deputy army commander Gen Dapong Rattanasuwan urged soldiers to show restraint in their protest.
Army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said Gen Prayuth had expressed
concern over the protest and had instructed unit commanders to order
the soldiers to return to barracks.
PAD spokesman Panthep Puapongpan criticised the protest, saying the move was aimed at pleasing the army chief.
He said the rally was an attempt to intimidate critics of Gen Prayuth.
The soldiers had no right to dictate editorial policy, he said.
The protesters left peacefully after about one hour.
Chavarong Limpattamapanee, president of the Thai Journalists
Association (TJA), said the TJA would call a meeting with its sub-panel
on media rights protection today to examine the matter.
"It is inappropriate for the soldiers to rally against the media outlet. They have no such duty," Mr Chavarong said.

ក្រុមនេះកាន់តែបង្កើនការទាមទារអោយរដ្ឋាភិបាលកុំទទួលយកការសំរេច
របស់តុលាការយុត្តិធម៌អន្តរជាតិអំពីចំណែកដីជាប់ប្រាសាទព្រះវិហារ
ក្នុងការបកស្រាយសាលក្រមកាលពីឆ្នាំ១៩៦២នៅប្រហែលជាខែតុលា។
