Former newspaper vendor succeeds as actress

Ny Monineath

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- A decade ago, she was selling newspapers on the streets. Today, however, Ny Monineath is a popular screen actress.

Born in Mean Chey district, she dropped out of Toul Tompong School and joined a fine arts school at the age of 12.

As the oldest daughter in the family, she sometimes sold newspapers on the street if her parents got ill.

At the age of 14, Monineath had a chance to earn some extra money performing at a ceremony but had to keep selling newspapers.

In her late teens, she met a dance teacher who owned a dancing club and selected her as a student.

Classes were from 4 a.m to 6 p.m. and her fame gradually grew.

Her first movie "Chhrus Pdach Brolang" (Valley of Death) was shot in Mondolkiri with Ny Monineath as supporting female actress.

However, she said people made fun of her dark skin, saying she could not act would never be a star.

The reactions to her next movies, "Pka Angkea Bos," "Morchhous Sar" and "Keo Chor Rorney" were more positive.

She had even more success with the CTN movies "Rachany Doung Chet" and "Phka Knong Phka" and also got chances to perform abroad in countries such as Australia and France.

She is planning for more foreign tours but will have to cancel local programs.

"I'm now busy starring in movies for Bayon, MyTV, and Mekong Productions," she said. "So I'll have to quit some program."

The actress said she is not yet engaged. "No one has come to ask me to be his fiancé," she said.

She currently lives in Borey Phnom Penh Thmey with her mother Sok Sophealy and her father Eng Sovandy.
