BANGKOK: The family of a Cambodian activist
murdered have called for the government to release two men sentenced to
20 years in prison for the crime, arguing that the men are being used as
scapegoats.
“We demand that Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun be freed. They are not
the real killers,” the late activist’s brother Chea Mony told AFP.
Chea Mony, who now heads the Free Trade Union co-founded by his brother, urged the government to find the real culprits.
Activists in Cambodia told Bikyanews.com that they believe the
government was using the men as scapegoats as they were unable to find
the real murderers of government critic Chea Vichea, who was gunned down
in Phnom Penh 9 years ago.
Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun had their long jail terms upheld last
month after a long legal battle, in a verdict that rights watchdogs said
was based on insufficient evidence.
The pair say they were framed by a group of police.
According to activists, the evidence against the two men is very
limited and they argue does not give credence to the government’s claim
that they were responsible for the murder.
