PRESS RELEASE – 31 December 2012, Phnom Penh
CCHR
releases its follow-up report which provides a wealth of positive
recommendations for Cambodia to address discrimination against lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender people
Today, 31 December 2012, the Cambodian Center for
Human Rights’ (“CCHR”) Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (“SOGI”) project releases
a report entitled “Rainbow Khmer: From
Prejudice to Pride” (the “Report”) that offers legislative and
non-legislative recommendations to address discrimination against lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender (“LGBT”) people in all sectors of Cambodian society.
In the two years since CCHR published the first report on the situation of LGBT
Cambodians, “Coming Out in the Kingdom”,
few concrete improvements have been made and discrimination against LGBT people
is still prevalent. The Report examines legislation and programs that have been
implemented abroad with positive results, and suggests areas that should be
addressed in Cambodia based on an analysis of the human rights violations that
continue to occur against LGBT people.
CCHR SOGI Project
Coordinator Theng Nan comments:
“There are many
examples of successful legislation and programs from countries both near and
far, and we hope that the Cambodian government will begin to implement similar
measures so that LGBT people can access and enjoy the same human rights that
everyone else takes for granted.
The report establishes a positive vision for LGBT people in Cambodia,
one that we hope will be realized before too long.”
