PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) - Prime Minister Hun Sen will join a
groundbreaking ceremony next Monday for a $200 million shopping mall
development by Japan's top retailer Aeon Co Ltd, sources said Wednesday
According to Aeon's subsidiary Aeon Mall Co Ltd, the four-storey mall will be located on a 6.8 hectare site on Sothearos Street next to Hotel Sofitel on the Bassac River.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2014 with the main store being an Aeon general supermarket.
Analysts say the investment reflects growing interest in Cambodia among Japanese investors not withstanding the largely unskilled labor force and corruption.
Cambodia is at the forefront of Aeon's business expansion in ASEAN countries. The company says concrete details for malls in Vietnam and Indonesia are now being finalized.
