WASHINGTON — The U.S. says it won’t shy away from raising its serious concerns over human rights in Cambodia ahead of a scheduled visit by President Barack Obama.
Obama is expected to attend a summit of East Asian leaders in Phnom Penh (puh-NAHM’ pehn) Nov. 18-20.
In a commentary published this week in The New York Times, exiled Cambodian opposition leader Sam Rainsy urged Obama to stay away to avoid conferring international legitimacy on Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has ruled Cambodia virtually unchallenged since a 1997 coup.
Kurt Campbell, the top U.S. diplomat for East Asia, said Thursday that the U.S. was concerned about steps Cambodia has taken against opposition groups, civic organizations and individuals.
Rights groups have accused the U.S. of failing to press Cambodia on rights abuses.

Dear All,

It has been overdue for the United States to look into the abuses of democracy by the Hun Sen's regime.
To promote and protect democracy around the world, the US government has sent young Americans in harms way to Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan, for example.
In case of Cambodia, the US needs only to set conditions with the American aids to the Hun Sen's government.

What do you mean with your comment? Explain why.

Its way overdue ever since Hun sen stole the power by coup de'feat in 1997 until now abused in Cambodian was rampant and evictions were the norm and business as usual with Cpp regime elite cronies and its families using their connection to steal and killed innocent khmers people.

The United States has a proven record of overthrowing elected governments and propped up dictatorship regimes. Huns Sen is the kind of man the US loves to do business with as long as he aligns himself with the US economic and strategic interests. All Hun Sen has to do is to move away from China and the rest is smooth sailing.

To 9:31 PM,

Hun Sen is scared by true democracy.
Here are some of the abuses:
1. Blocking the freedom of the press and expression
2. Silencing all opposition voices
3.Arresting and jailing opponents on trumped
up charges
4. Killing or assassinating activists
5. Confiscating private lands and properties
6.Selling out national recourses for personal gains
7. Maintaining corruptions and nepotism

In addition to the abuses, Hun Sen is also a dictator and a traitor.
During the Vietnam war, the United States dealt with numerous dictators. Therefore, the US should and must set up verifiable conditions with American aids and dealings with Hun Sen's regime.
This is THE least expensive means for the United States to promote bonafide democracy in Cambodia.

Hun Sen needs foreign monies
and international supports, and the US should in the lead.

6:10 AM,
We disagree.
For one thing, Hun Sen was and is NOT elected. He was SELECTED !
He was set up by and for Hanoi.
He got his position of PM because of the Coup in 1997.
