VINCI Airports plans to invest up to US$ 400 million over the next eight years to enlarge capacities as Phnoim Penh and Siem Reap will break the two-million passengers’ mark this year.

PHNOM PENH - With traffic booming and new airlines such as Qatar Airways serving Cambodia, VINCI Airports- the concessionaire to 70% of Cambodia Airports, the Kingdom’s three international gateways of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville- plans to invest close to $400 million. The money will serve to upgrade Cambodia’s airport system over the next eight years, according to chairman, Nicolas Notebaert.

Notebaert, speaking at the Global Airport Development (GAD) conference in Paris, revealed that $80 million would be invested to expand the international terminal at Phnom Penh International Airport. Expanding the terminal in Phnom Penh would allow for the installation of a new state-of-the-art baggage handling system and create more than 3,000 sqm of retail space. The upgrading will help to expand potential capacity to five million passengers a year. Another U$ 100 million will also help upgrading Siem Reap International Airport until year 2020. Construction will include the addition of six new gates and and create a bigger and more efficient check-in area. The airport is also due to handle up to five million passengers per year.

Despite the difficulties faced by Sihanoukville Airport to attract new airlines and air services –they are only limited domestic services a few times a week to Siem Reap-, VINCI Airports is committed to set up to US$ 200 million for a new runway at what looks today as a ghost airport…

The latest forecasts predict that Phnom Penh could be handling around three million passengers as early as 2015 and Siem Reap up to four million passengers by 2020. For Sihanoukville, VINCI Airports expects also four million passengers, but around 2025.
