PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Hundreds of teachers
from 16 provinces gathered at Democracy Park Friday to demand increased
salaries as they marked International Teachers Day.
Cambodian
Teachers Association President Rong Chhun said he and 15 representatives
planned to petition the National Assembly, the Royal Government and the
Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.
Rong Chhun said the
teachers wanted $250 a month. Salaries, which were increased 20 percent
this year, are now $60 for primary school teachers, $80 for junior high
school teachers and $110 for senior high school teachers
Teachers
also make money on the side, with some taking 100 to 500 riel [3 to 12 cents] from
students every day. Others sell things to the students or work as
motorcycle taxi drivers.
