Singapore loses 'true friend' with King Father's death

PHNOM PENH, 17 October 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - Singapore's former president S R Nathan says the republic has lost a "true friend" with the death of King Father Norodom Sihanouk, Channel News Asia reported Tuesday.

"It was during Sihanouk's leadership that Cambodia was among the earliest to support Singapore's independence," Nathan reportedly said in a condolence letter.

In a separate letter, former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew praised Sihanouk for "guiding Cambodia to independence in 1953 and as the chief architect of Cambodia's glorious renaissance in the 1960s."

Lee, who visited Cambodia during the 1960s, said he was also "the symbol of hope and courage during Cambodia's long struggle for peace and reconciliation."

Goh Chok Tong, who succeeded Lee as prime minister, said Sihanouk had "contributed tirelessly to Cambodia and its people," the report said. "The progress and prosperity that Cambodia is enjoying is a result of the stable foundation nurtured during the late king's reign."

Their letters were addressed to Sihanouk's wife.
