SEOUL, (AFP) - North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un expressed condolences
at the death Monday of former Cambodian king Norodom Sihanouk, praising
him as a "close friend" of Pyongyang.
"I express sincere
condolences to the bereaved family and the Cambodian people," Kim said
in a message to Sihanouk's son and the current ruler Norodom Sihamoni,
according to the North's official news agency.
Sihanouk, whose
life mirrored the turbulent history of his nation where he remained a
revered figure, died of a heart attack in Beijing at the age of 89.
The
former king, who abruptly quit the throne in October 2004 in favour of
his son, had been staying at his Beijing residence since January.
Kim
said Sihanouk had maintained the "most lofty and noble friendship,
unprecedented in history" with his own country's founder Kim Il-Sung and
his late son Kim Jong-Il.
Kim Jong-Un took over after his own father Jong-Il died last December.
Cambodia
is the North's oldest ally in Southeast Asia. Their relationship began
in the 1960, and Kim Il-Sung built a home for Sihanouk near Pyongyang.
