PHNOM PENH, 22 October 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - Civil society plans to petition the
government to allow exiled opposition leader Sam Rainsy (pictured) to run in next
year's elections, a human rights activist said Monday.
"Civil society generally wants to see unification of the political framework," said Suon Bunsak of the Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee.
Sam Rainsy, who has been sentenced to 10 years for uprooting border posts and forging public documents, is pushing to return to Cambodia to pay his respects to the late King Father who died last week.

Tith Sothea, of the Press and Quick Reaction Unit of the Office of the Council Ministers, accused Sam Rainsy of exploiting the former king's death for political gain.
The government has previously said that Sam Rainsy is free to return to Cambodia to serve his sentence. He is currently believed to be living in France.
