Cambodia to display ex-king's body for three months

October 15, 2012
The Jakarta Globe
Former king Norodom Sihanouk, who has died in Beijing, will be flown back to Cambodia for a traditional funeral Former king Norodom Sihanouk, who has died in Beijing, will be flown back to Cambodia for a traditional funeral
The body of revered former Cambodian king Norodom Sihanouk, who died in Beijing aged 89 on Monday, will go on display in Phnom Penh for three months before a lavish state funeral, an official said.

The body is set to arrive in the Cambodian capital on Wednesday afternoon and a mourning period will last until October 21, government spokesman Khieu Kanharith told AFP.

"(The) funeral will be three months later," he said, explaining that it would give Cambodians a chance to pay their respects to the beloved monarch, whose life encompassed turbulent years of rule, exile, conflict and tragedy, including the Khmer Rouge reign of terror.

The decision was made at a high-level meeting in Phnom Penh, hours after news broke that the royal had died early Monday at a Beijing hospital following a heart attack.

Cambodia's current King Norodom Sihamoni, who ascended the throne after his father Sihanouk abruptly abdicated in 2004, and Prime Minister Hun Sen have flown to Beijing to collect the body.

Khieu Kanharith said he believed around a hundred thousand people would line the streets of the capital on Wednesday to mark Sihanouk's final return to Phnom Penh after spending the last 10 months in China undergoing medical treatment.

Sihanouk's long-time assistant Prince Sisowath Thomico said he too expected a large outpouring of grief for the charismatic royal in Phnom Penh, where flags were already flying at half-mast on Monday.

"We can expect many people along the streets when the body returns," he told AFP.

He said plans to put the body on display were in line with Cambodian practice.

"It's according to the tradition of the Cambodian royal family," he told AFP, adding that the same procedure was followed when Sihanouk's father, then King Norodom Suramarit, passed away in 1960.

If spitting on the corpse of this loser brings back the 3 million lives that died under his monarchy brings back the dead, it would be the most joyest occasion.

When Is Hun Sen's turn? When are the Vietnamese going to take back Hun Sen's body to be buried in Vietnam?

Well, we all know about the history of Ex-King Sihanouk but even though, we still have at least something to respect for his death as a Koun Khmer and we never express such as harshness, ruthless, cruelty and uneducated way but we give him a bit of respects anyway. To me, I believe that one in a million like you to express unlimited anger and unable to control it as Hun sen’s speech. So, think about it.

Great! It's going to be a freak show of his highness corpe. Phnom Penh is going to make a lot of money from his majesty dead body. Who ever idea it was, doesn't give a damn about his highness "rest in peace", his soul will be lingering and lost until his dead body is creamated according to the cambodian tradition.

My folks didn't get to dies at old age like him,my father life cut short by his cronies,my brothers lives cut short by followers Pol pot.Say anything you wish because you're not me,if you were me your opinion will be changed or perhaps worst than me.

A new dawn for Cambodia.A giant dark cloud is disappearing and will not return,a brilliant new world is waiting for us.

Sihanouk was nothing, but a play boy,a film star and a reckless king, that cost his 2.5 millions lives of his own people, in the 70s and in his final gable in the 90s,with Hanoi's puppet. He sold all the rest of his power to Hanoi as long as his palace is secured. He betrayed his country his loyal fighters from the 70s to the 90s for Hanoi's puppets to be killed without mercy. He was simply a laughing stock in Human's history.

Brothers and sisters it is time not to entrust our faith in one man like our older generation did.It is time to be free and determine our own destination.

Country and power is not belong to one man,but every countryman.

No one should be above us or below us.

If only one in a million Khmer expressed much anger toward this loser King. Does it mean that out of 3 million Khmer died under his ruling, only three Khmer were angry with this loser King before they were slaughtered by the Vietnamese installed Khmer Rogue Pol Pot?

I regret that your parents weren't killed by Pol Pot and this loser King.

Very pathetic, your father and three brothers were killed by Khmer rouge regime? It’s so sad indeed but you’re not alone dude. For my part, in 1975 we were ten people in the family my parents, sisters and brothers. After falling of Phnom Penh city we were evacuated to Koh Sotin Kampong cham and then Taing kouk Kampong cham, between 76-77 my two elder sisters, four elder brothers and parents were sent to work at Tum nop kampong thmor but actually for one way ticket that’s what I was told by local comrades in Taing kouk, my younger sister and I were sent to chamka leur (red soil) working as mobile team at that time. And again unfortunately my sister was sent to work at rice fields. Therefore, I lost my contact with her since 1978. End of story. Each victim has a lot of things to tell right? Don’t tell me that you’re alone suffered from KR regime. What I’ve said one in a million was right because most of the words you've expressed were profanities. If someone living in the city it doesn’t mean that well educated person, if someone goes to University it doesn’t mean that knowing how to talk in a good manner and courtesy, if someone is raised up or educated abroad it doesn’t mean that knowing how to live in society or to be a good citizen, so, what do you think about your anger? I’m telling you again that you’re not alone to get angry but we express our views in a good manner and not any of profanities. Sorry! Yobal Khmer.

Agree. I to lost my relative to kr but never blame pol pot or others. My Khmer pride to save srok Khmer land is too strong to blame my Khmer comrades mistakes. I do not blame our leaders for not be able to persuade Khmer to watch each others back. I blame those individual who are not united for the same cause. I am sure that our leaders have good intention to save srok Khmer.

To All Khmer Yeurng (all of Khmer citizens):

Please don't talk nonsense. You don't know what you are talking about. Stop being manipulated by other Anonymous mentioned. You need to be quiet and let's focus on Unity. We want CNRP and CPP to reunite as one without fight each others in order to change the leaders. We wish all Khmer/Cambodian citizens or members of major parties CNRP and CPP to merge after the merger of SRP and HRP including other small parties like Khmer Democratic, KPPM, etc.

So, stop fighting each others. We need to work together to save our Khmer nation.

It is timing. Khmer folks both at home and abroad (USA, Australia, NZ, France, Canada, S. Korea, Japan, and so on), please stop fighting each others and please take the positive outlooks and stop hating other because of the Vietnamese/Yuon manipulation and don't let our neighbors Yuon/Viet and Siam/Thai to see our weakness.
So, watch out on each others no matter what happen. Please think and be careful.

Thanks for listening.

Khmer Yeurng.
