They then turned to the Cambodian government for help, but their request was refused. Now, they live in limbo and become stateless. At the moment, there are 9 houses in the area. The villagers said that during Sihanouk's Sangkum Reastr Niyum regime (1955-1970), the border line was 6 kilometres away from their village, but now their village is located inside Vietnam and has become Vietnamese territory.

These people were illegal settlers after the wars. They're like many many people who got evicted recently in the news. They should have taken the offer by the youns. Hopefully they still have that chance or it may be too late. Be smart or ask youns to legalize your ownership, maybe bargain with them for land ownership and have their citizenship.

In 2000, I read an article in the Procheaprey (Popular) Magazine about Khmer people crying about Vietnamese encroachments on their farmland. Khmer people can't even farm and graze their cattle on their own lands because the Viet authority will arrest and beat them up. Khmer border guards did nothing to protect those Khmer farmers.
