PHNOM PENH, 22 August 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - Information Minister Khieu Kanharith (pictured) said
Wednesday that exiled opposition leader Sam Rainsy was welcome to
return home as long as he served his jail sentence.
"Nobody is banning Sam Rainsy from returning to the country," he told reporters. "He can come back, but he has to stay in prison."
If Sam Rainsy wants to avoid jail, the minister said he would have to find a lawyer. On the other hand, he can go to prison and ask the king for royal pardon, he added.
The minister welcomed the establishment of the new National Salvation Party, saying it would help the ruling Cambodian People’s Party avoid complacency.
Sam Rainsy, who is believed to be living in France, has been proposed as chairman of the new party which is being formed by his existing party and the Human Rights Party.
