PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Funcinpec and the
Norodom Ranariddh Party plan to merge at a joint congress in late
August, senior officials said.
The officials said the merger of the two royalist parties would be held without Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the former Funcinpec leader who was deposed in 2006.
Nhiek Bun Chhay, executive president of Funcinpec, told reporters that the merger needed to take place before October when voters have to register their names for next year's general election.
Sao Rany, secretary general of the Norodom Ranarridh Party, said the merger would involve party members rather than the parties themselves.
"If we dissolved the Norodom Ranariddh Party, we would lose board members of the Norodom Ranariddh Party in districts, provinces and communes," he said.
“One plus one equals two. One minus one equals zero. So if we're separate, we'd be zero. When the royalists of the two parties are added with activities, support will increase.
“Currently, if we see only discord, we will die in 2013," Sao Rany said. "So only a merger will increase our support.
"I'm not walking away from principles because what I have done is to follow Prince Norodom Ranariddh, who planned to merge with Nhiek Bun Chhay," he said.
"Because coordination wasn't smooth, I took on the role of finalizing this task. When we succeed with the merger, we will invite Prince Norodom Ranariddh to be party leader."
