Cambodia says it has 'good' relations with Philippines

PHNOM PENH, 28 August 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - Cambodia has good relations with the Philippines, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation spokesman Kuy Koung (pictured) said Monday.

"The relations between Cambodian and the Philippines are good," he told reporters.

"The ministry has summoned back to Cambodia the ambassador whose term has ended and it is a completely internal affair so there is no impact on relations between the two countries."

Regarding territorial disputes over the South China Sea, the spokesman said Cambodia maintained its neutral position.

"Foreign Minister Hor Namhong has claim that Cambodia has adopted a fair position as ASEAN chairman," he said.

"Cambodia doesn’t get any benefit from the South China Sea so we adopt a neutral position because the countries involved are in one community whereas China is an ASEAN partner.”

China and ASEAN members Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam have overlapping claims in the South China Sea.

Cambodian officials have blamed Philippine and Vietnamese intransigence for the failure of ASEAN foreign ministers to issue a joint statement at last month's annual meeting in Phnom Penh.

Hor Namhong has blamed an "unexpected mishap" for the failure.

I hope Phillipino Govt don't starve our people to death or abuse our people like Maylasian...

We dont see our govt abuse other people in Asean. Im a daily news reader here in Manila but its quiet disappointing really on what happened in the ministerial meeting in Cambodia. But our thanks to Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand for immediately mending the riff as our fellow Vietnams was also disappointed.

We want to see our Asean more stronger and learn from it. Cambodia can be taken patiently due to its newness membership.

Asean should move faster and decide for its common interests without coersion or intimidation from all these superpowers. We are fellow Aseanese so our collective efforts must prevail over them.

FILIPINOS LOVE AND TAKE ASEAN SERIOUSLY.

Thank you Khmerization for this space.
