Cambodia fails to explain ‘dirty politics’ statement [to the Philippines]

MANILA: Claiming that he was still indisposed, the Cambodian ambassador failed to appear before the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and explain his statement blaming the Philippines and Vietnam for the non-issuance of a joint communiqué following a recent ministerial meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) hosted by Phnom Penh, according to a senior diplomat.

Undersecretary Raul Hernandez, the foreign office spokesman, confirmed that Ambassador Hos Sereythonh did not show up on Tuesday at the DFA where he was to receive a Philippine protest over his statement.

“We summoned Ambassador Hos but he remains indisposed,” Hernandez said. “We hope he will come when he is no longer indisposed.”

Hernandez disclosed that originally, Hos was summoned to appear before the DFA on Monday to receive Philippine “note verbale” protesting his statement.

However, Hos failed to appear citing ill-health, the same reason he cited when he again did not show up on Tuesday and instead sent the Cambodian embassy’s second secretary to receive the protest note, Hernandez said.

Diplomatic observers have noted that the move appeared to further deepen divisions within the Asean where at least four of its members are involved in a territorial dispute with China in the South China Sea.

When asked whether the Hos could be declared persona non grata, Hernandez answered: “We are not going there yet.”

In a letter to the editor published in full on Monday by The Philippine Star, one of the country’s largest circulation dailies, Hos said Cambodia should not be blamed for the non-issuance of the joint communiqué after hosting the Asean foreign ministers annual meeting July 9 to 13.

Instead, Hos said the Philippines and Vietnam were to blame for allegedly engaging in “dirty politics” and in pressing for their “inflexible and non-negotiable” stand on the inclusion of their South China Sea dispute with China.

Because of their stand, Hos said Asean failed to issue a joint communiqué after the meeting, considered as unprecedented and the first since Asean was established 45 years ago.

haha Ah Hos is no show. This guy like any other Hun Sen cronies can never be confronted with questions. Can only bark and whistle from a distance. Is this the best representative we have for Cambodia? So now we have Hun Sen, Mee Ay You, Ah Hos,and Ah Nor Namhong running the country with their foul mouth. Haha oh Cambodia I sure feel sorry for you. I can only hope Vietnam punish Ah Hun Sen for his disobedience. Maybe kill one of his family member?

That is what's happened when you say shit without thinking....Before you open your mouth you must think in your head,
Your tongue is poison and venom like a snake bites. You can hurt someone if you're using your tongue without thinking like Cambodian's ambassadors had done in the past week about shit that their host caused.

Now,chicken out not showing his face to explain why he remarks like that" dirty politics" Mr Hos probably don't know what he was talking about,If he does,he probably goes out their to answer philiphine questions.Mr Hos/Madam Ay should resign, you both make Cambodian looking bad, look dumb, look stupid etc.

Next time ;think before you talk, you're represent khmers people, khmers people were not stupid like your clans Cpp,be civilized, we lived in world societies, not in the jungle like your hun's clans did.

the Philippine was overplaying their hand at the ASEAN meeting. They believed that they can take more advantages from a situation in South China Sea by thinking that all members will side with them. Now, the Philippine divert thier frustration in South China Sea by have deplomatic attaking on Cambodia and it is really become a laughingstock.

Mr. Hos don't need to reply. What the Phillip is going to do? Nothing! I think they're just keep crying like big baby.

Attacking Prime Minister Hun Sen from Khmer overseas is okay with me, but I rather want see them focus on the topic and stop thinking that their English is a lot better than the rest of us. Often not!

You are obviously in the same boat as khmer over seas since you are in the country, why not fight against the corruption, for justice? So for to say khmer over seas are not doing anything is a little hypocrite wouldn't you say?

Cry about what? All they want is answers to why Ah Hos is using such a strong word against them. If you can't answer what your intentions are, isn't that being scared? You guys are so funny. Do you understand what your role is as an ambassador? Probably not.

Do you know what ASEAN mean and what they are suppose to be? A unity you fool. When a member need support, you as a member should try to find a solution. If feel like not providing one because it is not your problem.Do you understand he consequences are in the future for Cambodia? Probably not. As a country you need political, economic, and stability for every country. Near or far. How can a country grow if you feel like its not your problem. Like north Korea for example.

Your comment is just like those two clumsy ambassadors.

Hello People,

First i'm a Khmer from overseas Australia, Cambodia's Ambassadors may have gone too far with their words, but blaming Cambodia on the SCS situation is abit too much as well. Where was the international community when our civil war reignited again in 1997, what about the recent Preah Vihear situation and the Border Supplement Treaty. ASEAN and the UN knows, but they did nothing. And the ruling at ICJ is taking too much time when that area is rightfully Cambodia's and what about the so called ASEAN observers from Indonesia, really nothing has happened, nothing for Cambodia.
