Just
5 years old when the Khmer Rouge conquered Cambodia, Ratner and her
family were part of the forced exodus that emptied Phnom Penh. Like
countless fellow Cambodians, her family endured forced labor,
starvation, cruelty and execution. Her father, a descendant of a
Cambodian king and a poet, disappeared. Based on her family’s story "In the Shadow of the Banyan", the
first-time novelist tells of 7-year-old Raami, swept up in the horrors
of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime. In the midst of all the despair,
Raami’s mother protects her and the young girl manages to holds onto the
beauty of her father’s poetry.
