PHNOM PENH, 5 June 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - Sam Rainsy Party deputy spokesman Kimsour
Phirith (pictured) said the leading opposition party was open to talks for a
merger with the smaller Human Rights Party.
"We are always open wide for uniting with democratic people and nationalists," he said. "Such negotiations would have to stand on a policy of mutual respect and values."
He said the proposal for a merger by the Human Rights Party Monday was in line with democratic principles but that the parties would have to value each other.
Human Rights Party leader Kem Sokha made the announcement after winning control of 18 communes in weekend elections.
He said he would discuss the merger with exiled opposition leader Sam Rainsy after official results are released by the National Election Committee on June 24.
