PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Cambodian
election officials say Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruling party has won an
overwhelming victory in local elections.
The National Election Committee announced final results Sunday
from the June 3 polls showing that the ruling Cambodian People’s Party
won 1,592 of the 1,633 commune chief posts that were at stake.
Opposition parties took the remainder of the seats.
The ruling
party earlier claimed victory in the polls and the result was expected.
The party has been in power for nearly three decades.
The
elections for local governing councils were seen as an indicator of
public opinion ahead of general elections expected in 2013.
The Khmer has a saying: "The hens that lay eggs on the rice can't resist eating the rice". In analogy: "Hun Sen's party which both organised the election and at the same time stood for the election will not resist cheating to win".
