SOS Story: Like so many children who arrive at the doorstep of SOS, Sophal Sey has seen much hardship and sorrow.
At the age of six her parents died. She and her siblings moved in with their elderly, impoverished grandmother. Without enough food to eat, they often skipped meals. Her grandmother asked the local authorities for help. Her brother went to live with monks while she and her sister were placed at SOS Children’s Villages in Battambang.
Before arriving at SOS, Sophal Sey was sad because she didn’t want to leave her grandmother. But when she got to the village and saw the beautiful garden and homes, she grew hopeful. “I felt I could live here,” she recalls thinking.

A Natural Athlete
Sophal Sey is tall, athletic, and loves to play soccer.
Now in eighth grade at the SOS school in Battambang, her favorite subjects are English language and Cambodian literature. She also takes dance and computer science. In her free time she plays soccer and helps her mother cook, clean house, and water the flowers.
Sophal excels at all sports, but especially soccer. She is her team’s goalie. Her team recently won the provincial-level match, and she has earned multiple awards in several sports. For instance, she won the 100-meter dash in Battambang and has been selected to represent her state at the national level.

Improving Children’s Lives in Cambodia
Poverty, AIDS, a legacy of decades-long conflict and lingering landmines deeply affect the lives of Cambodia’s children.
“I wish every needy child received the same care I do at the SOS Children's Village,” says Sophal.
