A gunman shot and killed the manager of his father-in-law’s electrical
supply business in the capital yesterday in a suspected dispute over
money before turning the gun on himself, police sources said.
Hun
Sothy, chief of Daun Penh district police, said that at about 2:45pm,
Nguon Vuthy, 48, also known as Touch, shot Vong Sokretsarabotr, 31, the
general manager of P.P. General Electrical Accessories, at the store in
Daun Penh district’s Boeng Raing commune yesterday.
“The victim
was shot by four bullets,” Hun Sothy said. “Three bullets were shot at
his chest, and another one was shot at the right side of his head. He
died immediately on the first floor at his table in the office.”
After the shooting, police said, the killer shot himself in a locked company bathroom.
Officers found a pistol in his right hand.
According
to police, preliminary investigations indicated the killing might have
been related to a dispute over money between the two parties.
“So
far, we do not know the exact reason for the shooting,” Hun Sothy said.
“The police now are working and investigating this killing.”
Sen
Sokha, an employee of P.P. General Electrical Accessories who witnessed
the shooting, said that in his five years as manager, Vong
Sokretsarabotr had always been on good terms with all of the company’s
employees.
“He was a very friendly man, and also a good
manager,” Sen Sokha said. “He had never been in an argument with any
staff in the company.”
According to Sen Sokha, before the
shooting, Vong Sokretsarabotr and Nguon Vuthy had been at odds over
company money, which Nguon Vuthy reportedly felt entitled to as the
owner’s son-in-law.
“Nguon Vuthy had asked for company money
from Vong Sokretsarabotr for his own use, but the general manager
refused because the money did not belong to him, but [Nguon Vuthy] could
not accept it,” Sen Sokha said, adding that the killer had asked for
money many times in the past.
Chea Tong, owner of P.P. General Electrical Accessories, could not be reached for comment.
