Cambodian PM opens 60 mln USD brewery plant, urges production for exports

PHNOM PENH, May 14, 2012 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday inaugurated a 60 million U.S. dollar Khmer Brewery plant on the outskirts of Phnom Penh's Dangkor district, urging the country's beer manufacturers to produce for exports.
To date, there have been six brewery factories in the country, he said, adding that according to the figures of the Ministry of Industry, Cambodia spent about 400 million U.S. dollars last year for beers and alcohols.
"As competition goes across border, I'd like to urge all beer manufacturers in Cambodia to produce not only to supply domestic market, but also to supply to foreign countries," the premier said during the inauguration ceremony.

He said the development of beer industry would increase the government's tax revenues because a can of beer will be required to pay 30 percent of tariff and VAT to the government.
Leang Khun, chairman of the Khmer Brewery plant, said the plant, a joint venture between Cambodia's Chip Mong Group and Ziemann Group of Germany, is capable to produce 50 million liters of beer annually.
The factory creates about 1,500 jobs, he said.
