ASEAN defense ministers expect code to be approved soon

PHNOM PENH, 29 May 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - ASEAN defense ministers agreed Tuesday that a code of conduct for the South China Sea will be approved soon as China, the Philippines, Vietnam and Brunei resolve maritime issues.

Speaking at a news conference, Cambodian Defense Minister Tea Banh said the agreement to approve the code was aimed at resolving conflicts in the South China Sea.

Tea Banh said the ministers expressed their commitment to fully and effectively implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of the Parties in the South China Sea, signed by ASEAN countries and China in Phnom Penh in 2002.

He also said that the Chinese and Philippine defense ministers meanwhile agreed to continue open discussions and to avoid verbal confrontations during meetings.

Tea Banh said the ASEAN defense ministers also agreed Tuesday to intensify military cooperation with eight partner countries by meeting every two years instead of every three.

Formed at the ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting (ADMM) in Hanoi in 2010, "ADMM-Plus" includes Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Russia and the United States.
