Pakistanis seen relocating textile manufacturing to Cambodia

Published: 20-Apr-12

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) – Pakistani investors plan to relocate textile manufacturing units to Cambodia because of Pakistan's energy crisis and government indifference, the Business Recorder reported Friday.

The report by the Pakistani financial daily said the investors were in touch with a Cambodian ministry to reach an agreement on setting up the first manufacturing unit.

Ijaz Khokhar, chief co-ordinator of the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (Prgmea), said they would visit Cambodia next month to finalize a deal to set up a plant costing 100 million rupee ($1.1 million).

He was quoted as saying that the plant would be set up "on a test basis to judge the business environment of the country"
and would be a multi-product unit making denim, martial arts uniforms, workwear, hospital garments and sportswear.

"This year we were unable to export the consignments to the EU and US markets on time because of gas shortage in winter and electricity cuts in summers," he reportedly said.

Soaring energy tariffs, he added, had made future deals with international customers uncertain for local manufacturers.

Ijaz Khokhar was also quoted as saying that Pakistani textile manufacturers were also planning to shift their foreign investment focus away from Bangladesh towards Cambodia.
