Heroin disguised as hair dye smuggled into Springvale, court told [two Cambodian men imported 65 kilos of heroin into Australia]

TWO Cambodian men appeared in court today charged with importing 65 kilos of heroin into Victoria in herbal hair dye sachets.

Magistrate Lance Martin was told that Sambath Sok, 32, and Chhodaphea Kev, 38, had limited English and it was the first time they had been in custody.

The men were arrested last Friday as a result of a joint investigation between the Federal Police and Customs and Border Protection.

It is alleged border protection officers at the Sydney International Mail Gateway detected an anomaly in a package sent by air parcel from Cambodia to an address in Springvale South.

During an examination of the package, the officers located what appeared to be heroin within a quantity of sachets labelled as herbal hair-dye.

Customs and Border Protection officers in Sydney intercepted a second consignment of hair dyes from Cambodia, which contained the same substance.

Mr Sok, of Bonnyrigg Heights, and Mr Kev, of Edensor Park, both Sydney suburbs, faced charges of importing, attempting to possess and possessing a commercial quantity of heroin.

They made no application for bail and were remanded in custody to re-appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on July 6 for a committal mention.
