Ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday changed his plan to head to a morning market in Siem Reap, choosing instead to visit the sick father of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen because of security concerns.
Matichon Online reported that Thaksin left the City Angkor Hotel for the airport yesterday morning and was believed to be travelling to Phnom Penh to visit the father of Hun Sen.
Earlier in the morning, he had breakfast at the hotel with MPs and key figures of the Pheu Thai Party. Some red shirt leaders such as Phayap Shinawatra, also Thaksin's brother, joined them.
Over the past three days of his stay in Cambodia's Siem Reap province, Thaksin attended Songkran festival activities with visiting Pheu Thai MPs and members of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD). He held a meeting with them each day after appointments with unidentified "important" Cambodian people, said Matichon Online.
Last Wednesday, Thaksin's plane was diverted from Laos' Wattay International airport to a Lao military airport after reports of a plot to assassinate the former leader.
The Lao government had to step up security for him, according to Kwanchai Praipana, a red shirt leader in Udon Thani who had travelled to Laos to meet the ex-premier.
After landing, Thaksin said he had managed to escape four assassination attempts.
In a separate interview, Defence Minister ACM Sukumpol Suwanatat said yesterday he believed there really had been an assassination plot against Thaksin.
