PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) – The Phnom Penh
Municipal Court questioned former police commissioner Heng Pov’s
right-hand bodyguard Hang Vuthy Saturday over four cases including
breaking out of jail.
The hearing came a day after he went to the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights (Licadho) to claim he was innocent of charges of planning to kill a former head of Electricite du Cambodge (EDC).
Hang Vuthy was sentenced to 18 years following his conviction while Hang Pov is serving a life sentence for several crimes.
"Prosecutors will have to show the verdict in which the court has charged him with many crimes with Heng Pov," said Hang Vuthy's defense lawyer Kao Sopha.
He said the court had ordered Hang Vuthy back to Prey Sor prison where he had been serving his sentence and that his client planned to to file an appeal.
Licadho officer Am Sam Ath expressed confidence that Hang Vuthy would be safe in prison as the group would visit him.
